STRUCTURE: NEW PASSENGER TERMINAL OF ZAGREB AIRPORT

SHORT DESCRIPTION:

In terms of its shape and functionality, the plan view of the new passenger terminal of Zagreb Airport consists of two discretized geometrical forms that are divided into a total of 3 wing units: the main building (1st wing) and linear structures of space piers on the left and right (2nd and 3rd wing).  Eight passenger boarding bridges are positioned in front of the building, heading from the main building and piers to the runway.  

The main building consists of a reinforced concrete structure with post-tensioned floor slabs (ground floor and three floors). Plan view dimensions of the main building's interior are 137.5 x 131.1 m. The main plan view grid of the RC load bearing structure is 7.2x14.4 m and 14.4 x14.4 m. The ground floor is positioned at +0.00 m, the first floor is at the height of +5.40 m, the second floor is at the height of +10.20 m, and the third floor is at +15.00 m.

The steel truss roof structure of the main building, type Mero, is a corrugated plane of double curvature (positive and negative), whose frontal part curves towards the runway thus forming a façade and pier vaults as it extends further. The largest plan view dimensions (shadows) of the main building's steel roof structure are 152.3 m in the direction transverse to the piers and 151.2 m in the direction along the piers. 

The main plan view grid of the triangular truss structure is 3.6 m (base of the triangle) x 3.6 m (height of the triangle), while axial height of the space structure is 3.0 m. The roof structure is supported by 18 piers, on the axial plan view grid of 43.2 m (in the direction parallel to the pier) and 28.8 m (in the direction perpendicular to the pier).  The height of the steel roof structure's apex varies from +20.00 m to 34.00 m. 

The left and right piers consist of a monolithic reinforced concrete structure (ground floor + 2 floors). The length of the left pier wing is 83.50 m, and the length of the right pier wing is 40.25 m.

At the level of the floor +5.40 m, the pier width is fixed and it is 16.18 m, while at the level of the floor +10.20 m, the pier width is variable and it ranges from 16.18 m to 17.41 m. The ground floor is positioned at +0.00 m, the first floor is positioned at the height of +5.40 m, and the second floor is positioned at the height of +10.20. 

The second floor is covered with a cylinder roof structure of the space steel truss of variable height, type Mero. The minimum height of the truss in the pier area is 1.4 m and it gradually increases to the height of 3 m at the point of connection to the main building.  The apex height of the steel roof structure of piers varies from +20.50 m at ends to 24.70 m at connections to the main building.
